Innsbrook election candidates must actually live in the village, board says

Posted

The Innsbrook Village Board of Trustees is reinforcing a requirement for electoral candidates to actually reside within the village.

According to a revised candidate certification approved by trustees on Oct. 12, electoral candidates must swear that their primary residence is within the village of Innsbrook and that they are registered to vote in Warren County. Previously, the village’s candidate requirements stated that someone must be a resident for at least one year, but didn’t clarify that Innsbrook must be that person’s primary residence.

Although many Innsbrook residents live there year-round, the village is known for its prevalence of vacation homes that are only occupied periodically or for part of the year. That led to some confusion with property owners incorrectly believing they could run for election in Innsbrook, even though they primarily reside somewhere else.

“Every time we’ve had an election, at least in recent years, we’ve had a little bit of a problem with that,” Board Chairman Jeffry Thomsen said during the board’s Oct. 12 meeting.

Other existing requirements for candidates remain in effect, including that they must be 21 years old and a resident for at least one year before the election.
