The smile on Jersiah Higgins face was evident after he drained shot after shot in Wright City’s 61-37 win over Mark Twain on Monday, Feb. 3.
Higgins scored a career-high 31 points, surpassing his previous best of 22. The senior guard said he was just having "fun" on the court.
“It feels great just to come out here and show what I can do,” Higgins said.
Coming into the game, Higgins’ motivation stemmed from his team, his brother and his new hairdo.
“I got my hair braided and I just felt different today. When I get my hair braided, I’m top five so it felt different today,” Higgins said.
The win marks Wright City’s first EMO conference win, as they had previously been stuck in a 0-6 drought.
The Wildcats were up at the end of each quarter (9-8, 28-15, 46-27) and were able to break out offensively in the second quarter.
“That was the first time we were completely whole and healthy. Grant Lehmen makes a huge difference with us, so I was very impressed with our first win and hopefully we got more coming,” Head Coach Ken Brown said.
Lehmen had previously been out due to injury, but Monday night’s win marked his third game back with the Wildcats. Lehmen reached double digits during the game with 10.
Brown added that their resilient defensive performance led to fueling their offense, noting the team’s ability to set good screens and get to the rim.
“It was just Jerisah doing what he does so [Mark Twain] did not have an answer for him today,” Brown said. “Duan McRoberts did a good job getting the ball to him and just having [Lehmen] and having that middle presence is a huge deal for us.”
Brown also touted freshman Kaveon Schulte for being a “pest” on defense.
Since the win, Wright City has gone on a little bit of a winning streak with two wins in a row.
“I think we’re getting a little confidence, we won two games in a row,” Brown said. “I’m excited about what we can do coming down the stretch so I think if we keep staying the course, we’re going to be a tough time in districts, I know that.”
Wright City will travel to Silex on Feb. 7 for another conference matchup at 7 p.m.
