One of the two people arrested last May for allegedly beating and starving a child has pleaded guilty to a felony charge.

Nicole L. Crets, 33, submitted a guilty plea on Dec. 21 for felony child abuse. Crets and her husband, Christopher G. Crets, are accused of beating a 12-year-old child to the point of severe bruising across his body. They also allegedly deprived the child of food, causing him to lose about 40 pounds in the span of four months.

Nicole Crets now has a sentencing hearing scheduled for Feb. 22 before Presiding Circuit Judge Jason Lamb.

The case against Christopher Crets, 41, remains pending in the circuit court. In addition to the charge of child abuse, he is charged with second-degree kidnapping. He is accused of handcuffing the child victim to a bed whenever the child was left alone.

Christopher Crets also has multiple charges against him for being a previously convicted felon in possession of firearms that were found at his home on Highway OO.

Nicole and Christopher Crets were arrested May 3, 2020, a day after the child victim was found wandering alone in St. Charles County. Police officers took the child to a hospital to examine his injuries, where he was also diagnosed with complications from malnourishment. The child told police he had been beaten whenever the couple thought he had secretly eaten food.

The next court hearing for Christopher Crets is Jan. 25 in Warren County Circuit Court.
