Authorities have arrested a Warrenton-area man for felony domestic assault after a victim’s family members asked deputies to check on her.
The assault charge was issued last week against James D. Malson, 23, along with charges of stealing a firearm and unlawful possession of firearm by a felon.
The Warren County sheriff’s department said in an arrest report that a woman living on Orchard Farm Circle called family members April 27 and alleged that Malson had a handgun and was threatening her at the residence. Her family then contacted the authorities.
Malson already had two outstanding warrants related to assault charges in Warren and St. Charles counties, the sheriff’s department said, and deputies were dispatched to the home to take him into custody.
After the arrest, deputies spoke to the female victim and observed several apparent injuries. The woman had bruising and a cut on her face, and was favoring her right arm, deputies said. She alleged that the day prior, while she was talking on the phone with a family member, Malson jerked her arm in order to take the phone and then began striking her.
A visit to the emergency room showed the woman had suffered a fracture in her arm, the sheriff’s department said.
Deputies also searched a vehicle at the home and found a handgun with a serial number that was reported stolen out of St. Louis City, according to the arrest report. Malson allegedly told deputies he had received the handgun from a friend.
The sheriff’s department said Malson previously pleaded guilty to a first-degree assault charge in St. Charles County in 2017, and is therefore not allowed to possess a firearm.
Malson was placed into custody without bond. The domestic assault charge against him is a class A felony. According to online court records, Malson also faces a prison sentence for violating probation on his 2017 assault conviction in St. Charles.
