The Wright City Community Food Pantry is collecting food donations to help families in need have a merrier Christmas by providing the ingredients for a full holiday breakfast and dinner that they can prepare and enjoy at home.
“It is our privilege to help those living on the margins here in the Wright City area. … We are simply neighbors helping neighbors,” the pantry said in a flyer distributed to potential donors.
Those looking to help provide holiday meals can donate part or all of the fixings for a local family, said food pantry Director Joe Purl. Food item donations can be dropped off at the food pantry, which is located on North First Street East, or at Wright Way Diner, located at the intersection of North Service Road and Wildcat Drive.
Donations are needed by Dec. 5 so they can be distributed to families in mid-December.
These are the items that make up the holiday food baskets distributed to families: Pancake mix, syrup, sausage, ham, potatoes, two cans of corn, two cans of green beans, pie, dinner rolls, canned cranberry sauce, canned gravy and 1 pound of butter or margarine.
The food pantry is also asking donors to help provide small Christmas stockings for kids, consisting of: Hot chocolate packet, candy cane, gloves socks or hat, and small toy.
Purl said the collection has gotten some support so far, but that more is needed to provide enough meals for struggling families this Christmas.
“Our goal is 50 meal baskets, and we’re not there yet,” Purl said. “This is a great opportunity for people, whether they live in Wright City or are just a friend of Wright City, to really make a difference in the holidays.”
For those who aren’t able to directly shop for or drop off the meals, the food pantry welcomes monetary donations in support of the holiday meal baskets. Each basket costs about $50, but any amount of donation is appreciated, Purl said. To send a check for the collection, write it to Wright City Community Food Pantry and mail it to 150 Trotters Creek Lane, Wright City, MO 63390.
