Warrenton suffers 27 point road loss four days after winning Washington Tournament title

The Warrenton Lady Warrior girls basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday with a 27 point loss to Lafayette High School four days after winning the Washington Tournament.

The Lady Warriors (10-7) suffered a 49-22 loss Tuesday. The Lady Warriors Tuesday trailed by a slim three point margin after the first quarter but were outscored 17-3 in the second quarter and 13-0 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The Lady Warriors trailed 43-13 after three quarters.

Warrenton Girls Basketball Coach Greg Williams credited Lafayette for their performance but believes the Lady Warriors gave them “a nice assist.”

Warrenton was prepared going into the game for the zone defense Lafayette played most of the night, Williams said.

“We’re not supposed to be in the corner,” Williams said. “Why we’re there tonight I have no idea. You get trapped in the corner and then we don’t have the releases right and we just turn the ball over.”

The Lady Warriors pride themselves on their man to man defense. They got beat by simple give and go plays and cuts, Williams said.

“We just didn’t come to play,” Williams said. “And kudos to them (Lafayette). They stayed with it and did a great job.”

The loss comes less than a week after The Lady Warriors won the Washington Tournament in impressive fashion, winning all three games by double digits. They defeated Holt 47-31 in the quarterfinals, Parkway West 38-28 in the semifinals and Ursiline 41-26 in the finals.

“We just came out and won a tournament,” Williams said. “We went out as a three seed and won the tournament which was good for us.”

Williams does not believe the Lady Warriors handled the success of winning the Washington Tournament well, he said.

“Yesterday in practice, we were a little flat,” Williams said Tuesday. “And then today we were super flat. And we just got hammered by 27 points. I don’t think we scored in the third quarter. So if you’re going to do that, it makes it a long night. That’s for certain.”

Two more road games are next on the schedule for the Lady Warriors. They are scheduled to play at St. Charles today weather permitting. They are scheduled to play at Marquette High School Feb. 8.
