Firefighters save St. Vincent School; Fire destroys fish fry shed

St. Vincent de Paul Church and School had a close call Thursday, Dec. 3, when a fire destroyed their fry shed used for preparing their popular fish fry and chicken dinners. Fortunately, the school and church were left unscathed.

Fire Chief Jeff Backhaus said only minutes were left to act quickly enough to save the school. Although there was minimal damage, Backhaus said the Marthasville Fire Protection District’s (MFPD) first responders were able to wet down the building and begin knocking down the fire in the fry shed.

Backhaus said the call came into the Warren County Emergency Dispatch Center at approximately 7:30 p.m. with a report of smoke in the area of the church. Upon his arrival, heavy fog made it difficult to see if there was a fire until he came up onto the property and saw the building fully engulfed.

A second alarm was called when it appeared the school building could be at risk. Fire departments on scene included Marthasville, Augusta, New Melle, Union, Warrenton and Washington. Boles and Hawk Point provided back up for Marthasville and Warrenton fire districts. The fire was knocked down by 8:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire was listed as undetermined and accidental by the State Fire Marshall.
