A Wentzille man has been charged in connection to an intoxication-related crash near the Missouri River last October that injured himself and another driver.
Samuel S. Zytko, 26, was charged last week with driving while intoxicated, leading to serious physical injury; as well as three counts of felony drug possession and a misdemeanor traffic offense.
According to a report from the Missouri Highway Patrol, Zytko is believed to have been under the influence of opioids when his vehicle collided with two others on Highway 47 north of the Missouri River bridge. Zytko’s minivan crossed the center line and struck a trailer being towed by a Jeep, then traveled into the path of a Ford pickup truck, the highway patrol said.
The highway patrol alleges that a passenger in the pickup truck received serious injuries when the truck slammed into the side of Zytko’s minivan. However, in an Oct. 26 report filed just after the crash, the highway patrol reported that one person in the truck received only minor injuries.
Zytko himself reportedly suffered serious injuries in the crash. A newly issued charging document states Zytko was hospitalized with serious head trauma.
The highway patrol is alleging that Zytko was unresponsive immediately after the crash and appeared to be under the influence of drugs. He was reportedly revived with a dose of Narcan, an anti-opioid treatment, and immediately regained consciousness.
Pill bottles found on Zytko’s person allegedly contained hydrocodone, oxycodone, and amphetamine, according to the highway patrol.
