Fall start planned for Marthasville well and tank site construction

Engineers with Cochran Engineering currently anticipate proceeding to bids in September for the first phase of a project to build a new city well and 300,000-gallon storage tank.

Engineer William Johanning provided an update on the project during the Marthasville Board of Aldermen public meeting on July 28.

“(In June) we got our well site survey done. ... We are continuing with the site grading and access road design as well. That piece we’re planning on going out to bid in September. The project will be awarded the month after and they can start with the clearing and construction of the road and site,” said Johanning. “After that we’ll do the well house and water main extension at the same time, and then the final phase will be the tank.”

The full project is anticipated to be complete by June 2022, Johanning said. He added that each of the three phases will go out separately for contractor bids,  in order to get the most competitive bids for each piece of the work.

However, that timeline for construction is contingent on the city finalizing its purchase of the property where the new well and tank will be built. City officials believe the long-extended negotiations over the property will be complete by September.

Mayor David Lange said the contract for purchase of the land for the water system is currently in the hands of the private owners who are selling their property to the city.

“They’ve got the ball in their court. It’s getting closer and closer,” Lange commented.

Officials did not provide additional details about the contract for purchase because it is still in negotiation.

The new water system is planned for construction to the northeast of the current city boundary. Once built, the system will connect to the existing water network at the north end of Hiawatha Street, and will provide improved service to Marthasville residents, city officials have said.

A long term cost estimate of $1.4 million has been provided for the project, but the true cost won’t be known until each phase of construction goes out for contractor bids.
