Driver crashes, injured trying to pass highway mower

One driver was flown to a hospital Wednesday morning after a crash involving his vehicle and a tractor towing a mower unit on Highway M.

Jerry R. Dean, 79, of Wright City, suffered serious injuries in the crash, according to a report from the Missouri Highway Patrol. Dean was airlifted to Mercy Hospital St. Louis from the site of the crash, which happened around 10 a.m. June 23.

The highway patrol reports Dean, driving a 2006 Kia Sportage, was attempting to pass a MoDOT tractor mowing the side of Highway M, east of Highway H. The patrol said the area Dean attempted to pass the mower was a no-passing zone.

As Dean’s vehicle was passing the tractor, he reportedly saw a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction.  Dean attempted to return to his lane of traffic and struck the side of the towed mowing unit, the highway patrol said. The Kia then overturned on the highway.

Dean allegedly was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
