Warren County sheriff’s deputies say a man wanted in two other counties was arrested here after leading them in a car chase and attempting to deploy a tire iron as a road hazard.
Michael C. Fuchs, 26, was arrested on Aug. 31 following a two-hour car and foot pursuit, according to court documents. He is charged with second-degree assault against a police officer and resisting arrest by fleeing while creating a substantial risk of injury.
The sheriff’s department reports that a deputy was in the area of Highway U and Cedar Grove Village Road investigating a stolen vehicle, when he stopped a vehicle driven by Fuchs. A police database search allegedly showed Fuchs as person of interest in a separate criminal case, at which point Fuchs was told to leave the vehicle.
Instead, Fuchs allegedly fled in the vehicle and led the deputy on a high-speed chase down Highway U. The sheriff’s department alleges that Fuchs at this point threw a tire iron out of the driver side window in an attempt to hit the pursuing deputy.
After an hour of dangerous driving while evading deputies, Fuchs’ vehicle lost a tire and he fled on foot into the woods. Deputies said it took another hour of searching to locate him.
The sheriff’s department alleges that Fuchs was being sought by the Lake St. Louis Police Department for a similar incident, in which he purportedly fled police while throwing tools at them. He also has an active felony warrant out of Callaway County for resisting arrest, and a warrant from St. Peters for motor vehicle tampering.
Following his arrest, the sheriff’s department asked the Warren County Circuit Court to hold Fuchs in custody without bond. Because of his suspected history of fleeing arrest, and because he allegedly is homeless with no ties to the area, deputies do not believe Fuchs will return to court if he is released.
Associate Circuit Judge Richard Scheibe agreed with the request, ordering on Sept. 2 that Fuchs be held without bond. Fuchs’ next court hearing was set for Sept. 15.
