Dare to Excel: Abbie Guinn

Wright City High School senior Abbie Guinn found several interests early in life that have already led her to helping run a business and have given her a clear direction for the future.

Guinn has been laying a path to combine her enthusiasm for animals and photography, joining a dog breeding business and becoming a member of 4-H in high school to improve her skills with a camera. She said the 4-H organization has helped prepare and motivate her for the future.

“I’m really interested in animals and I want to become a veterinarian after college. And I’m also good at photography, so I wanted to show what I can do,” Guinn said. “I like to take pictures of dogs. ... I do dock dogs and duck hunting, so I like to take action shots of the dogs jumping in the water. I also do a lot of nature photography.”

At the same time, Guinn also raises goats that she shows at the Warren County Fair.

Q: How has 4-H helped you with your goals?

“It’s a really supportive community. You can create a new business and they’ll hype you up. They’re very supportive of what you want to do, and they can help you.”

Q: How did you get started breeding dogs?

“I had dogs when I was younger, and I met a lady out in Wentzville named Carol Ramsey, who became my mentor. Since then I’ve done dog showing, duck hunting, and I breed labs.”

Q: How many dogs do you raise? Does it ever become a challenge?

“We usually have eight litters a year. It’s definitely a job, but 4-H has helped me learn to manage time. I have to plan all my meetings, and I know how to make sure everything is done on time.”

Q: Is that something you want to do long-term?

“Yeah. I plan on going to school to be a vet or vet tech, and then on the side I’ll be breeding dogs.”

Q: How does photography mix with that plan?

“Once the dogs get to a week old, I start taking pictures every week and I’ll post them on Facebook for my business.”

Q: Raising dogs and goats seems like a lot of work. Why do you do it?

“It’s fun. I like to getting up and having a schedule. I like to make sure everything’s taken care of, and it’s what I want to do.”

Q: What other school or community activities are you involved in?

“Right now I’m a Wright City Ambassador. ... We help around Wright City, and right now I’m planning a (project) to plant flowers at Ruge Park.”

Q: Are any subjects in school challenging for you? How do you deal with that?

“Business and finance. That’s something that I definitely need to get under my belt. ... I take lots of really organized notes, with lots of highlight marks.”

Q: Who has been a strong mentor for you?

“(4-H coordinator) Carey Benne has been one of the strongest and most supportive mentors I’ve ever had. Anytime I’m down, she’s always there to pick me up. She pushes me outside my limits.”
