A serious crash that started on Interstate 70 ended with a driver taking out the Diekroeger Park sign in Wright City.
The crash occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. May 2.
The driver’s name was redacted in the crash report provided by the Wright City Police Department.
According to the report, the driver was traveling east on I-70 at about 75 miles per hour when a vehicle merged onto the interstate from Wildcat Drive at exit 199. The driver said the vehicle quickly swerved in front of him, causing him to hit the brakes and swerve to avoid hitting the merging vehicle.
The driver told police he attempted to drive onto the shoulder but ended up driving through the chainlink fence separating the interstate from Veterans Memorial Parkway.
The driver then continued east on Veterans, entering the grass, driving through the Diekroger Park sign and ending in the park’s parking lot.
The crash report states the car suffered serious damage. The front passenger side wheel was removed from the car and was approximately 100 yards from the accident scne. The front bumper also was removed, and the lower half of the driver side door had a large gash where the metal was removed from the vehicle.
The front windshield was shatter and the car was leaking fluids from the undercarriage.
The airbags, however, did not deploy.
The driver declined medical service and his father arrived with a tow truck to remove the vehicle from the park.
During the May 11 board of aldermen meeting, Wright City officials discussed how to replace the park sign that was destroyed during the crash, but no action was taken.
