County one-third vaccinated; new cases triple since June

Posted

One-third of Warren County residents have completed their vaccinations against COVID-19 as of Monday, according to a data summary published Monday by the Warren County Health Department.

Local health officials have been sounding a warning for a rapid increase in area COVID cases, including in a growing number of children. There were 94 positive cases detected in June, 231 in July, and 345 so far in August as of Monday morning, the health department said. The department also said 26 percent of current cases are in children.

“Please get vaccinated. If not for yourself, do it for the kids who can’t get vaccinated and for the high risk individuals you encounter in your life,” the health department said.

Data collected by the Missouri State Department of Health and Senior Services shows the number of Warren County cases climbing to the same level they were at in January as a major winter surge was beginning to wind down. Nearly 4,000 confirmed or probable COVID cases have been detected here since data tracking began, with at least 30 deaths confirmed as a result of the virus.

Vaccination is offered daily without an appointment at the Warren County Health Department office at 101 Mockingbird Lane in Warrenton, as well as at any area pharmacy. The health department this month also began offering appointment-only third doses of the COVID vaccine for specific groups of immune compromised people.

Health officials strongly advise the continued use of masks at indoor settings with significant numbers of people, because the much more infectious delta variant of COVID can be transmitted even by vaccinated persons. At schools in particular, health officials recommend that all students and teachers wear masks to help protect the high number of children and others who haven’t been vaccinated.

For those who think they’ve been exposed to COVID, the Warren County Health Department is in the midst of hosting four weekly drive-thru testing sites, which began Aug. 20 and will continue Aug. 27, Sept. 3 and Sept. 10. Testing is done from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the fitness center parking lot at 3920 N. Highway 47.
