Murder, danger, and laughter are the themes of Warrenton High School’s spring play, “The Game’s Afoot” or “Holmes for the Holidays.” Opening night is Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m., continuing Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students.

“The Game’s Afoot” was written by Ken Ludwig in 2012 about William Gillette, a 1930s Broadway star who invites fellow cast members to stay with him at a Connecticut castle while he is recovering from a gunshot wound. As they gather, a female reporter is murdered.

Reece Bailey, stage manager, said the show is a typical Sherlock Holmes murder mystery with a lot of funny elements.

“I still laugh after watching it countless times,” she said.

Austin Agler, playing the leading role of William Gillette, said his character is an over-the-top eccentric man who adopts the role of Sherlock Holmes in his everyday life and on stage.

“He is very dramatic,” said Agler. “He is very much suspicious of everyone. I’m getting to play around with his character. It’s a very fun role.”

Agler said his role is challenging, compared to past musicals where songs break up the script. He said the words he says must be right on the mark in order to cue everyone else to the complicated task of finding out who is actually guilty.

“Everyone is a suspect,” said lead female role Alice Briggs. “There are multiple crimes that are all connected.”

Briggs said her character, Aggie Wheeler, is a fiery personality, unlike her own. She is enjoying her debut role as a freshman.

“I wouldn’t say this is a type cast,” she said. “Aggie is very dramatic. She’s a turn-on-a-dime type of character. It’s stressful, but a good kind of stress.”

Bailey said there are eight main characters in “The Game’s Afoot,” but more than 20 students are involved in the production.

“A lot of hard work has been put into this show,” said Bailey.

Bethanie Swiney, theater director, said the students will go from this production straight into the Senior Show which will be held Friday and Saturday, May 13-14. If you would like to reserve a ticket, email swineybh@warrencor3.k12.mo.us. Tickets are also available at the door.
