Warrenton and Wright City both had positive showings at the Mike Spoede Invitational.
Warrenton High School hosted the annual event last week. Warrenton and Wright City both competed in the event.
Warrenton junior Wyatt Claiborne led all area runners with a third place finish at the event. Claiborne finished the 5k race in 17:44. Warrenton cross country coach Jeremy Collins said Claiborne looked pretty comfortable throughout the race and was only one second off his time the previous week at Gans Creek.
“We have three more races before districts and the courses we will be running on could lend to some fast times,” Collins said. “He said that he felt good and he seems to be gaining more confidence as the season has progressed.”
Coalton Hill, Noah Cline and Jacob Beckemeyer all recorded top 25 finishes for the Warriors. Hill placed 21st, while Cline and Beckemeyer placed 24th and 25th in the race. Hill finished the race in 19:14, a 29-second improvement from his personal record. Cline finished the race in 19:38, an 18-second improvement on his personal record. Hill and Cline ran personal records for the second consecutive meet.
Madelyn Marschel led all Lady Warrior runners with a 25th place finish in the girls meet. She finished the race in 23:50. Briana Grooms and Camryn Petersmeyer both recorded top 30 finishes. Grooms finished 29th, defeating Petersmeyer by 0.2 seconds. Grooms finished the race in 26:20.70, while Petersmeyer finished the event in 26:20.90.
“Camryn has been dealing with iron issues and has had to miss a couple of meets and workouts…She has had some good workouts and we are hoping that she will be able to be running close to where she was last season,” Collins said.
Freshman Taryn Sharp finished the race in 28:31. Junior Ashlynn Reeves finished the race in 28:40. They both ran under 29 minutes for the first time this season.
“These two ran really tough and they worked together during the race,” Collins said. “It has been fun watching them really improve in their first season and how much fun they are having.”
Warrenton has three more meets scheduled before districts. Collins is looking forward to seeing how fast the Warriors can run and how they compete in the upcoming meets.
“Our goal is to keep working hard and be as ready as we can for districts,” Collins said. “They have had a great attitude and they have challenged themselves all year.”
Nicole Lotspeich and Mitchell Schubert both competed in the varsity race for Wright City. They both ran personal records in the event.
“I think it is evident that the runners have made strides this season, as it seems like each race is always better than the last,” Wright City co-head cross country coach Zack Gorman said. “I think this is a growing season for us. We have no seniors but a few dedicated young runners that will continue to grow along with the program.”
