Entering his ninth-grade year, Hayden Back didn’t feel like he was good enough to even be considered for the role of varsity quarterback. Turns out, the Wright City coaches saw more potential in him than he perhaps observed in himself. Told to be ready for the possibility of playing after halftime, Beck was spontaneously called onto the field during the second drive of the first game of his freshman season. From that moment on, he has been the starting quarterback for the Wildcats.

Now heading into his senior campaign, Beck is determined to build upon last fall, during which he completed 85 of 158 passes for 1,033 yards, throwing eight touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 233 yards and two scores on 63 carries.

When he began playing football in seventh grade, Beck was a receiver and free safety. In eighth grade he moved to quarterback. For the first two years of high school he did not play defense, but last season he was placed at middle linebacker, where he recorded 70 total tackles, one sack and one interception.

Beck is also the top returning scorer for the Wildcat basketball team, contributing 16 points per game last season. He also participated in track during his freshman year but prefers the constant activity provided by football and basketball.

In addition to sports, Beck has been a member of the student council and was the class president during his sophomore year.
While his future plans are still uncertain, he would like to continue playing football and has interest in Northwest Missouri State. He would like to pursue a career centered around his strength in math.

Q: What do you like about playing quarterback?
“The fact that you're pretty much the leader. If people don't know something, you should know it so you can help them. Other positions are focused on what they've got to do, but I focus on everything else, so I think it makes other areas of the game easier.”

Q: Which defensive position do you like most?
“I like linebacker best, because I like hitting people when I’m on the field, and that’s the easiest spot to do it from. Free safety is a lot of work, because you’ve got to read the entire offense. Middle linebacker is like reading one person, but at free safety you have to see the whole field.”

Q: What individual performance stands out most for you?
“My sophomore year against South Callaway, because that game was crazy, back and forth the entire time. It was the last drive, and we had to score or we were going to lose, because we were down by four points. There were four seconds on the clock, and I threw a 45-yard touchdown to Dylan Seabaugh. Every time I step on the field I think about that play, because it was awesome.”

Q: What was the biggest team accomplishment?
“Sophomore year when we were conference champs, because it’s never happened at that school before. We had worked so hard, and it finally paid off, because other seasons didn’t go as planned.”

Q: What do you hope to accomplish this season?
“I want to go undefeated. We’ve worked so hard and every player has grinded, so we want to win it all. During conference and regular season I don’t want to lose.”

Q: What do you like about basketball?
“I started doing it as a conditioning thing for football, but then I realized how fun it was. In basketball all the people on the team are people I grew up with, so when we go out there, we ball. We’ve played together for so long we always have chemistry, so it’s fun to be there everyday.”

Q: Who has had the greatest influence on your life?
“Coach (Jeff) Sargent, because he’s been around me, helping me and talking to me about football since my seventh grade year. He encouraged me to get involved at a young age as a ball boy. Even at practice I would stay after, and he would help me with my form. He’s always believed in me when others haven’t. He’s always hyped me up since he’s met me and boosted my confidence.”

Q: What’s best advice you’ve gotten?
“Sargent saying ‘The only person you can control is yourself.' He told me to focus on myself and once I started doing that it seemed a bunch of stuff got a lot easier.’”

Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
“Paris, because I’ve seen pictures online. If it’s nighttime, and you’re in Paris, you’re going to be really happy.”
