Athlete of the Month: Brayden Wilmsmeyer

The journey toward graduating from a small private Christian school in Wright City has taken Brayden Wilmsmeyer through many destinations. He attended two elementary schools in Warrenton, before moving to Florida and back at a young age. His middle school years included a stop in Wentzville, before he landed at Liberty Christian Academy as an eighth grader.

Now in the final months of his senior year, Wilmsmeyer is taking advantage of every opportunity to spend time with his peers. For the first time, he is a three-sport athlete, having participated in soccer during the fall, basketball over the winter and now beginning his first baseball season with the Eagles.

Wilmsmeyer has long taken part in basketball, playing for Holy Rosary before moving to Florida, where he was active in youth leagues.

“I just have fun playing sports,” said Wilmsmeyer. “I love it a lot.”

Becoming a full-time starter during his junior year, Wilmsmeyer spent much of his time playing shooting guard, while sometimes rotating into the post. He was a pivotal part of this year’s Eagles team, which went undefeated in Metro Athletic Conference play.

Having played soccer for three seasons, Wilmsmeyer rotated around the forward positions. Now entering baseball, he will be counted on in right field.

While he is uncertain of his exact plans, Wilmsmeyer aspires to play basketball at the collegiate level.

Q: What’s your favorite basketball memory?
“When we beat Maryville. That was the last game of the conference. We were undefeated, and that game was close the whole time. We fought so hard, and that was the most together I’ve felt with my team. It felt so awesome to stay undefeated in conference.”

Q: What are your top strengths as a basketball player?
“I always bring people together — playing for the Lord and being a good example for others who are watching and playing against us. On a basketball level it would have to be driving to the hoop and finishing. That’s where I got most of my points.”

Q: What kind of goals do you have for baseball season?
“Probably to win the state tournament. Hopefully we play well as a team and get far and play well in the tournament in Joplin.”

Q: What do you enjoy about playing soccer?
“I love how it’s nonstop. You’re always running and trying to fight for the win. It’s fun, because if you mess up, you can just get right back into the action.”

Q: What do you appreciate most about LCA?
“The family and Christian atmosphere. They’re all welcoming and not judging. They’re there for you no matter what. I really like that about LCA.”

Q: What is the biggest challenge that you’ve overcome?
“The daily task of getting over myself and putting pride to the side to live for Jesus every day. It can be pretty tempting to get focused on other things.”

Q: Who would you say has had the biggest influence on your life?
“Probably my classmate Josh (Dames), honestly. I’ve known him forever, and he’s always been there for me and helped me grow through many situations.”

Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
“Jamaica. I’ve seen pictures, and it looks really nice.”

Q: What’s your favorite topic to learn about?
“I just love the competitive nature of sports, so learning from that is something I like to do.”

Q: Which teacher or coach has made an impact on you?
“Tanner (Meyer), my basketball coach. He’s always been a good presence to be around and is uplifting. He always has good things to say before games.”
