It will be a family affair for two members of the Riggs family when the Class 3 state track championship is held this Saturday.

Zoe Riggs and Elizabeth Riggs were the lone state qualifiers for the Wildcats at last Saturday’s sectional meet held at Montgomery County High School.

Only the top four finishers in each event at sectionals advanced.

Zoe Riggs, a junior, placed second in the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 20.35 seconds and third in the 800 in 2:24.26.

“Zoe had some lingering injuries early in the year and is finally starting to get healthy,” Head Coach Billy Garrett said. “ She has been running strong the past few weeks and we look forward to some good performances at state. Our sectionals had the top five times in the state for her races and only four got to advance to state, so they were some competitive races just to qualify for state.”

Elizabeth Riggs wound up third in the 300 hurdles in 49.47. She is only a freshman.

“Lizzie is still growing as a hurdler, so reaching state is a big accomplishment for her freshman year,” Garrett said. “The events she excels in are all back-to-back in a meet, so we selected the hurdles as we felt she had the best chance to get to and possibly place at state.  In the past couple weeks she has been able to take over 2.5 seconds off her time and grow more confident in her hurdling.”

The Class 3 meet will be held this Saturday at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

Wright City also had three relay teams that competed at sectionals.

The 4x100 relay consisting of Kobie Griffitt, Teagen Riley, Taliyah Felton and Tristyn Moore had the best finish. They placed sixth in 56:08.

The 4x400 relay of Teagen Riley, Kobie Griffitt, Elizabeth Riggs and Zoe Riggs finished seventh in 4:30.80.

The foursome of Kaedyn Johnson, Samantha Finch, Ashley Miller and Elizabeth Riggs placed eighth in 11:55.37.

Relay team lone qualifier for Warrenton

Warrenton was able to have one state qualifier as the girls 4x800 relay team placed third at Saturday’s Class 4 sectional meet, also held at Montgomery County High School.

The foursome of Veronika Besser, Maddie Marschel, Loren Howard and Brianna Grooms set a personal best for the second meet in a row, this time placing third in 10:32.28.

The Class 4 state meet will be held this Friday in Jefferson City.

Though more state qualifiers eluded Warrenton, the team did had some other strong performances.

Besser, a sophomore, placed sixth in the 400 in 1:03.80. Senior Grace Bostic placed sixth in the 100 hurdles in 16.90.

Junior Dana Pruitt also placed sixth in both of her events, clearing 7-6 in the pole vault and 87-0 in the javelin.
