County man arrested for shooting at home with people inside

Sheriff’s deputies quickly arrested a southern Warren County man last week who they say shot at a home while five people, including a toddler, were inside.

Hunter D. Hazel, 21, was arrested July 21 and charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action. Deputies allege he fired a 9 mm handgun multiple times into a home on the 17000 block of Highway N, north of Holstein. No injuries were reported.

The shooting took place before 7 a.m., according to an arrest report. Deputies reported finding three bullet holes in the residence and at least two bullet holes in an SUV parked in front of the house.

Victims told the investigators that four adults and one 2-year-old child were inside the residence at the time. Hazel was identified as a potential suspect in the shooting.

Deputies located Hazel on nearby Smith Creek Road. He reportedly consented to a search of his vehicle, during which deputies say they located a handgun and spent bullet casings that matched casings found at the victims’ home.

While speaking with deputies, Hazel allegedly admitted to shooting at the home in retaliation, believing one of the residents had previously burglarized the home of a family member and stolen a gun.

Hazel is being held without bond at the Warren County Jail.
