To The Editor:
A recent editorial cartoon in The Warren County Record showed Uncle Sam telling an angry taxpayer that the government took away deductions from him to fund his tax cut: “So I gave myself a tax cut out of my own refund. Hey! Where’s my tax cut?” Uncle Sam chimes in: “And his refund.”
It’s a funny cartoon but completely wrong. The reason refunds are lower is because withholding tables have changed, not deductions. This year the government withheld less than in previous years, thus your refund is lower. You still got your tax cut, but the government let you have more of your income instead of keeping it for you at zero interest.
I just wanted to set The Record straight.
